Project: Lord Of The Rings

Introduction

Have been trying for some time to come up with something I can do to my main server. I have a Yeong Yang Cube Server case wrapped around a sensible spec machine (Athlon 2500+, 512MB Ram, 128MB GeForce Ti4200, 8x Pioneer DVD Burner, 40, 60, 60, 120, 120 GB hard disks with a basic 4 dial fan controller in it.

After a little thought, decided that maybe a Star Trek theme might not be completely out of the question - I am, after all, a long standing Star Trek Fan, and as the case is (pretty much) a cube in shape, what else but the Borg with their propensity for cube shaped ships.

Initial Thoughts.

Case is black already and looks nice so going to cut out some templates and spraypaint some green borg lettering on it, which may make it look a little more Matrix inspired than anything else, but I like the idea anyway.

Windows in BOTH sides of the case - the case is divided up into 2 seperate sections, one for the motherboard and cards, the other for the PSU and drives - this means that both sides have something to show - thinkin about a custom window - dont much like the huge blank pane of perspex type ones - probably something with the Borg Logo in it.

Colours - well - case and drives etc are already Black, so will go with a black n green colour scheme - will replace Case LEDs with green ones, probably 2 pairs of green cathodes and might even look into tinting the windows green, depending on cost/effect. Fan controller currently has blue lighting around it, so will have to look into the possibility of replaceing those LEDS too - luckily green LEDs are, by nature, not BLUE so not stupidly expensive.

Case has already been partially modded - opened up the front 120mm fan intake and added 2 120mm fan exhausts out the top. They currently have (pretty naff) blue LED Fans in them - they need to go - thinking either Green LED fans (but LED fans tend to be noisy and slowing them down also dims the LEDS without some additional surgery) or maybe completely clear ones. I love these new super-quiet fans from akasa, but at this time, they are only available in orange/amber colouring so not sure yet. As ever, practicality is the priority - so I want it QUIET - thats why i put all those big 120mm fans in, in the first place. There are also a couple 92mm intakes on the drive side, but they're well and truly enclosed by hard disks, and are mesh filtered to the rear so I don't expect a lot of modding done there - but you never know.
